The territory includes the Kerguelen archipelago, the islands of Amsterdam and Saint-Paul, the Crozet Islands, Adelie Land and, since 2007, the tropical Îles Éparses.
The French Subantarctic Islands are located in the Indian Ocean southeast of Africa and have a total area of 7,672 km².
The Antarctic region of Adelieland covers an area of 432,000 km², while the Îles Éparses are located near Madagascar and have an area of 39 km².

Climate: is temperate, sub-Antarctic or Antarctic according to latitude. The islands are mainly of volcanic origin. The highest point is Mont Ross on the Kerguelen Islands at 1850 m.
Residents: The area has no permanent residents. About 140 researchers winter in four Antarctic and subantarctic research stations. This number can double during the summer months.
To this must be added the manning of the military bases on four of the Îles Éparses, which totals 54.
